Lots of Questions
Good morning and happy Tuesday! I hope you enjoyed Presidents Day weekend. I usually work that holiday and yesterday ended up being no different. Although as the day began, I told myself I’d work less. My tradeoff was going to be skipping my post this week as I write them on Monday. But then while catching up on news I came across first one piece and then another about AI development that stopped me in my tracks.
I’m linking to these essays below even though I consider much of this out of my lane. I mean, the investment implications of AI and AI-related infrastructure, even industry disruption, obviously impact the economy and are part of the investment landscape. These have been moving targets my industry has been paying attention to for some time now. But the scope of the issue/problem has rapidly grown far broader than most anticipate, and this quickly expands into realms that I don’t specialize in. Few do.
The pace of change these days is unsettling, to say the least, and that feeling compounds the more one pays attention (which is also true regarding other issues we’re facing as a culture). Still, it’s becoming more important that as many people as possible start following the details of the AI industry more closely; how it works, why it works, and what insiders tell us is coming. Immense opportunities exist and these should be paid attention to along with the growing list of unknown unknowns as the creators “grow” versus build these technologies.
To be clear, I’m not advocating anything other than increasing our understanding of AI, nor am I suggesting that you sign up for specific services. I’m not planning to use these services much personally and not at all with client information at this point. But I intend to learn as much as I can and will always be transparent about any use of AI in my work for you.
The first link below is an essay that went viral last week. The second is a longer piece mentioned in the first and was written by the head of Anthropic, relating to news that ultimately roiled the stock market in past weeks.
